Having watched the last two U23 matches: defeats by Sunderland and Middlesbrough, I am struggling to see anything to get exited about. Admittedly some of the players were missing as they were working with the first team. Dominated large parts of both games but lacked ability to unlock a well organised defence.

I agree, the time we take to pass the ball forward is allowing the opposition to organize there defence. We need to get the ball up to our front three quicker and improve our passing. When are we going to stop the short corners that only to end up back with Coady and if Traoe plays put him in the box in front of there goalie instead of him standing by the touch line like normal watching the game, he needs to do more when he plays than 4 or 5 runs to the bye line. The fans need cheering up so let's have some exciting football please.

5-0 Monday. Takes us above soton,
Coyw.

3.) 21 Nov 2020 22:02:07
The ref for Southampton is Andre Mariner so don't expect anything but a Southampton penalty!

4.) 22 Nov 2020 07:41:17
Re u23's : the average age of our squad is 18, there is a reason and a plan for this. Also, in the last game, the first choice back 3 ( Marques, Otasowie, Richards) were, as mentioned, training with 1st team therefore unavailable. FWAW.

5.) 22 Nov 2020 10:16:13
Good post Preston I read about that but didn't know how to word a reply to Ecosse. wrapped up in with the Ed yesterday apologies Ecosse.
Good to read posts about our u23s.
Would be excellent we win 5-0 I think we win 4-1 Jimenez hat trick and neves an about time 35 yard plus worldy but would take a 19 yard grub hunter from neves.
FWAW.

6.) 22 Nov 2020 11:32:07
Nothing like optimism, but we’ve never scored five in the Prem, Jimenez has only scored twice in a game once, we’ve only scored eight times in eight games and two of those were in the first match, be nice to see us have five worthwhile attempts on goal.

7.) 22 Nov 2020 13:17:28
Just in hope my score in post above Oxley. The odds are clearly on we will score 2 or less.
I think Southampton they play their game well by winning the midfield battle we win that with 3 in midfield and 2 up top we will win.
It's going to come at some point where we score 3 or more hopefully tomorrow night.

8.) 22 Nov 2020 18:34:33
Thing is phil789 and it might just be me, but we never seem to want to score more than two. Nuno seems to get us patiently defending and if moutininho is brought into the game as sub forget it. That's why we've been caught out so often in the last few minutes. I hope we go at em tomorrow. Saints are a very impressive team this year but you need to get among them but not give silly free kicks away. That said I'm going 3-1 to the lads, 2 early one late. COYW.

9.) 22 Nov 2020 20:27:15
Watching the Liverpool game can’t believe how much Jota had improved, he looks dangerous every time he has the ball and scored another cracking goal. I know he has better players around him but the higher tempo of play seems to suit him, that’s something we need to improve on. We’ve been banging on about it all season and it’s been highlighted on match of the day and yesterday on soccer Saturday. Our defence is solid and will be even better when Jonny is fit, we goals in attack but it’s the midfield where the main problem is. We are too negative there and don’t contribute enough going forward, I knew we hadn’t scored any goals from midfield but didn’t realise till watching soccer Saturday that they had any assists either. Neves should play a forward role as he is a shadow of the player we’ve come accustomed to, no goals in his last 34 premiership games and he looks like he’s low on confidence. Let’s hope he gets back to his former self and we look more threatening in attack. We need an attacking midfield player and another striker.

10.) 23 Nov 2020 07:55:48
Oh so true taff52, moutininho I'm afraid is a little over the hill speed wise now and never really needs a solid partner, dendonkeR (got it right this time) covers an awful lot of ground but doesn't quite have the flair required. Personally seeing as trainers (thats traore for everyone bar my phone? ) as now been sussed wide, I'd bring him in Central and allow jiminez some space and give some space for wing backs purely by dragging opposite defenders with him. If he hits a few too, well one might go in, it also increases the free kick possibilities in front of goal.

11.) 23 Nov 2020 09:55:22
Good post's above
Sadly we should have bought an attacking midfielder with flair in August. As above Mouthino is not mobile, What's happened to Neves is it the way we use him
Traorie is no good in the centre and not the super star the pundits make him out to be, opposition have sussed him. Sell him.
Its worth trying Fabio Silva alongside Jimenez.
We need our wing backs to perform tonight Saints are a tough side.
scoring goals has been a problem for a long time can't remember last time we scored 3.
It's going to be a tough old month, hope I am wrong but cannot see picking up much, unless there is a vast improvement in the way we play, don't who you can bring in to change things, Need to buy in January or finish mid table.

12.) 23 Nov 2020 11:17:44
Yeah good posts.
My thoughts are we can only go on how we have played previous same with Traore.
Like I have posted Traore needs to be at the top of his game every match sadly he hasn't done that this season yet all be it he has been used as an impact sub with less minutes on the pitch but saying that to be a top world class player he needs to do more imo.
Apologies for countdown to match start ha ha under 9 hours to wait.

13.) 23 Nov 2020 12:57:15
Morning Phil, Just watched Nuno's press conference seemed a bit subdued, perhaps he was just tired, mind you they asked some stupid questions, one player has tested positive on return from abroad, don't know who.

14.) 23 Nov 2020 13:27:10
Hi Yellowstone did Nuno talk about our lack of goals I saw a glimpse of a report in the e&s in which nuno was saying we need all the team to score not just Jimenez.

15.) 23 Nov 2020 15:45:35
To be Honest Phil, Nuno was very vague, didn't look very happy, unless he changes our style we won't score goals, think Jimenez is getting
P. off with the lack of supply, and Traorie is not the answer. Midfield is a big problem we need to create.

Had some tight matches with Newcastle over past two seasons all of which we impacted on the result in the final minutes. Would accept the same this time around but would prefer a more convincing performance and result on Sunday.
I know we do a brilliant job of holding on to what we have but it doesn't make for the most comfortable watch, live or on tv.
The somewhat frustrating aspect of our performances is that When we decide to be more offensive, we look the business, dominate possession and create chances. Usually results in us taking the lead but then we sit back. No disrespect to Newcastle but they are similarly not overly offensive. Game will be very dull unless one team decides to go for it.

1.) 23 Oct 2020 19:56:44
Sitting on 1-0 leads is what cost us our Euro place, Nuno knows it (which I suspect is the reason for the change in system) . But we are still too early on in this season with too many new players to be hopeful of anything more than a win, anything more would be a nice Sunday bonus 👍.

2.) 23 Oct 2020 20:53:07
VAR cost us a Europa League place! Trust in Nuno COYW.

3.) 23 Oct 2020 21:39:07
VAR technically and MR Dean cost us a top 4 finish.

4.) 23 Oct 2020 22:26:16
Nope, cause with another goal none of it would have mattered! Shocking decision yes and VAR did us no favours last season but bad decisions are part of the game. We still should have finished in Europe (fairly comfortably to be honest)! How many points were we in front of Spurs when we restarted?! With the form we had before lockdown some were tipping us as an unlikely 4th! We just didn't see enough games safe, I do trust in Nuno which is why I think he's learnt from it is all. This squad shake up has happened for a reason 👍.

5.) 24 Oct 2020 13:08:57
Burnley was the only game we dropped points in after leading, after lockdown! Caused by a 96th minute hopeful punt and scandalous officiating. Cheated out of Europe by VAR, at least 5 shocking decisions, not to mention the City penalty farce. COYW.

6.) 24 Oct 2020 15:25:22
An important factor in missing out on Europe was the small size of our squad, which Nuno was on record of preferring. It wasn't just VAR and dropping points at the death. It was only after the Sevilla game when Wolves management sat down and changed course dramatically for this season. That small squad cost us big time. But we've turned over a new leaf this season and we've had our best PL start in I don't know long.

Given the relatively short gap between this window closing and next one opening in January, it isn't the end of the world if we didn't get all our work done. However the extended domestic window does provide an option and there are good players out there. What do people think? Who, if anyone would folks target from EFL?
Watford's Ismail Sarr would be my pick. Second fastest player behind Traore and able to play on both flanks and down the middle. He showed he was capable of dealing with the rough and tumble of our game and turned in some 5 star Individual performances in a struggling team.

1.) 06 Oct 2020 21:05:25
Josh King - pretty solid player with lots of experience - short term cover for Jimenez if Silva isn't ready/ up to it?
or
More of a gamble partic the young English one - the 2 creative mids at Norwich - Buendia (sp) or Cantwell and the chap at Bees Benrahma (sp)?
Don't think we will buy any one though - at least not "names" perhaps another youngster like the chap from Rochdale - for the future!

2.) 06 Oct 2020 21:40:25
I would try cantwell and benrahma,
Build the squad up a bit.

3.) 07 Oct 2020 09:02:47
Brooks of Bournmouth a maybe🤔.

4.) 07 Oct 2020 09:48:05
Suspect both would be expensive. Also hard to tell if either can step up as even Cantwell only has modest premier experience. But both do look exciting and we are short of bodies in midfield particularly young forward focussed players.

5.) 07 Oct 2020 17:53:07
Why not try Matheson. Rochdale lad?

6.) 07 Oct 2020 18:56:35
He played in the under 23’s the other night. He looks pretty good to be fair.

02 Oct 2020 10:48:03
Need eight homegrown players in our 25 man squad. My observation is that a number who were listed last year have moved on and not sure they have been replaced: Gibbs- White, Doherty, Norris Graham.
Talk of Bennett leaving and loans for Sanderson, Kilman, Buur (who might be classed as homegrown) . Where are the eight required going to come from?

Ecosse Wolf

{Ed001's Note - there is no requirement, you can just have spaces in your squad.}

1.) 02 Oct 2020 12:10:49
Ed001. I believe age comes into it as well. Over 21? I think.

{Ed001's Note - yes, under-21s do not need to be registered.}

Better option than Hulk. There is a reason he has been allowed to leave China. Scored loads of goals over his time there but not in the last two years. Top scorer in the league got 29 goals last year and a good number scored over 20. Hulk got 9.
When you look at the names and ages of those who are scoring over there, you can see that they are predominantly players who are going for one last big pay check.

Problem with Hulk option is not solely his age and wage, it is mainly because he would not deliver. Need to be looking out for up and coming talent, there’s plenty out there as some of the European clubs are showing. R. B Salzburg being a good a good example.

Missed out on alleged target Oussama Idrissi, who has been confirmed as Sevilla signing. Shame as he looked the business. May well have a back up plan, as we had apparently put in a €16 million bid.
Can’t believe we’re not on lookout for a midfield enforcer, preferably a mobile one. ANM is the one I would like to see BUT maybe need to let that one go.

Need to think about looking at players in Championship. Watkins and Bowen are good examples of what can be unearthed. Teams who just miss out on promotion have players who very nearly were in the Premier League. Brentford are prime example and Benrahma.

Heard rumour Rayan Ait Nouri had opted for Valencia. If true then Vinagre will not be moved on. Not a reliable source but he had both clubs chasing him and Mendez works closely with both.

No Palhina in Sporting Lisbon squad for tonight’s Europa Cup match.
Everton signed Godfrey from Norwich, opens up opportunity for Bennett to get his preferred move back to Norfolk.

Far more positives than negatives from performance last night. Gutted that we lost so late on and felt we were the better side especially in first half. Neto going off was the turning point, as it ended our offensive threat. He always managed to get the ball under control however it arrived to him and link play. That ended when he left the field. This was partly due to fact that our clearances became more desperate and build up was less controlled. Withdrawal of Vitinha also detracted from our controlled build up as he showed a willingness to run forward with the ball, which is not something Neves and Moutinho do naturally, although I thought both of them played their part until they tired toward the end,
Wing backs played well both offensively and defensively. Back three did their job until late on when Kidman appeared to lose the flight of an innocuous looking ball and allowed it to float over his head to Rashford. Cruel blow so late on, especially for Saiss who was and has been brilliant for us of late.
Agree that a new deal for Saiss is greater priority than one for Traore, who continues to excite and infuriate in equal measure. Potential to be so much more than he is showing at present. Surely the technology available for after match analysis will show that he is static for large parts of the game, either sat on his backside with his arms outstretched or standing still in blissful isolation appearing to be unaware of the build up around him. Analysis of the video of games must surely give the coaches lots of points to get him to work on.
One last point on last night’s defeat, neither Traore or Podence, both of whom may have been carrying injuries, did enough tracking back in last 10 minutes. Podence needs to concentrate on doing some covering back himself rather than pointing to where everyone else should be.
Two general points to finish: need to work on different throw-in options and get Moutinho off all dead balls.

Traore: there is a real player in there, one that should be reeking havoc in opposition defences. Power, pace, two-footed and strong shot, albeit a bit wayward, he should have goals and assists in double figures. Someone is going to get the best out of him, hope it is Nuno or I think we might be regretting a huge opportunity missed.

Agree that we need an upgrade in a number of positions. Tweak to our system requires different attributes, primarily ability to carry the ball and move with speed. This identifies individuals who won’t be able to adapt. Traore however is not one. He has those attributes in abundance. Leeds interest in him is interesting and I have no doubt that they would find a way to maximise his impact as they have done with many players who came through the Championship.
I am frustrated watching him do the same thing every time he receives the ball. Collect the ball, stand still and face up the defender/ defenders, feint to move and then burst down the outside and deliver or don’t deliver a cross, the destination of which is anyone’s guess.
Presumably, he is being told to do this. He has far more to offer than that which we are asking of him and that goes for some others, : Neves and Dendonker being the most obvious. Every team has a style but ours now appears to be limiting our ability to win games.

Moutinho is too influential, his negative, sideways passing game slows us down. Never looks to either, drive at opposition or play through the lines. The first criticism is harsh given his age but it does deprive us of an attacking option. Neves follows his lead, plays far better when Moutinho not in the team, Chelsea a good example.

Moutinho dictates corner routines. Can somebody explain what they are about please? Otasowie booked because Moutinho couldn’t play a 5yard pass to him forcing the youngster to lunge for the mispass. Free kicks - why is this left to Moutinho, never delivers into the danger area with pace, which is what you see from other sides. You can see he is becoming frustrated with himself and getting himself booked and sent off.

We play with more pace and more directness, when he is not in the team. Not sure we have a replacement in the present squad, so might have to look to the January window to address the issue.
