Did not see that one coming out of the blue. Gomes to Villa.

He has been sold far too cheaply. I just get so frustrated, time after time. The club seems to let players go for ridiculously low fees. Yes, he was always on the cards to leave, especially when we got relegated, but still, I would've wanted way above 50 million for him. And if a club doesn't want to pay that, then they can just jog on.

Looks like all incoming transfers are dependent on selling players to raise this money. I would rather he moved abroad, but at the end of the day, Wolves need the money to restructure the squad.

VB Wolf, no one would pay the 50mill that Wolves wanted. Secondly, Gomes did not want to play in the Championship. And thirdly, it gets Gomes' 70 thou a week wages off the books to comply with EFL rules. I think it comes with the new rule, you can only spend 80 or 85% of your total income on transfers and wages. Wolves stand at 92%, I think, so if it stays that high, Wolves would end up with a points deduction.

I might be wrong on certain parts, but that's why Wolves are trying to get rid of their high earners. Players like Sa, Johnstone and Hwang, if they can sell those three, from what I've read, get another 170 thou a week in wages off the wage bill. This gives Wolves room to manoeuvre and bring in other targets.

If they throw in Ross Barkley, in addition to the fee, then it would be a good deal.

DMac, I totally get your point, and that Wolves now have to cut their cloth accordingly. It just goes to show how big a consequence the previous regime's ineptitude has had on our great club.

The chickens have really come home to roost, with Gomes's departure. The blame must be squarely laid at Jeff's feet. Gomes is too good for the Championship, and, at his age and with his ability, he is ready for European competition. A necessary sacrifice for us in order to rebuild. Others will follow.

GWIL1, I totally agree, and this is the reason we're in this position. Jeff Shi has a lot to answer for.

DMac - you need to be careful. If you keep writing intelligent, sensible posts you will really upset Fosun and their supporters on here!
I would be interested to hear where you got the 92% figure from as the latest accounts show, (in £ms), turnover 171 wages 162 and amorts 88 meaning the ratio is 146%
Now the ratio should probably only reflect players wages not the cleaners etc etc.

However to get to 92% you need the players wages to drop to 69
Although this is more likely than the ludicrous 162, (think how much the cleaners are therefore paid!!), it does seem a little low especially as all figures are for 13 months ( since we are talking ratios you don't need to scale down to 12 months!)

I think Wolves are working to the figures taken after the players have had their 25% relegation reduction. I think the figures you're working off are the last available, when we were still a PL team.

Tfig3, as far as im aware it's only players' wages, transfer fees, agents' fees and amortisation that is taken into account. No manager, coaching staff, tea ladies, or anybody else. This is where everything drops. I think im right, but trying to find out exactly who earns what and players out on loan can be complicated.

If im wrong i'll hold my hands up, but as ive said, Wolves have bought 1 player. Reason: get the high earners out, wage bill down, then spend some money.

Gwil1 i probably did not factor the reduction in because wasn't sure how much everyone lost is it 25% or more i don't know. But apart from buying Rafiki for 10mill Euros how much money have Wolves spent.

This is all because the new rules on squad cost and not breaking any rules as the EFL is diffrent to PL. that's why getting big earners of the wage bill is crucial i the Eds could explain it better.

Good and Dmac, excellent thread.
I doubt both the actual fee and the amort are included, as that would effectively be double counting.
From an accounting perspective, it makes more sense to include the amort.
Note, however, that the denominator - turnover - will plummet next year, even including the parachute payment, so the task is indeed far from simple.
Note also that players with lower wages but high amorts, like Tolu, probably cost the club just as much as J. Gomes!
Finally, however you view the numbers, it does shine a horrific light on the level of non football wages - who gets all that money, as despite my comment, I'm pretty sure it is not the cleaners!
Taking the accounts as my source, the club says it employs just over 350 non-first team squad employees.

Scaling the figure back to 12 months, from the 13 months given in the wage bill, and removing the first team squad, leaves roughly £200k per employee????
Who, other than the players, earns that at Wolves?????

Wasn't it reported the wages dropped by 50% during the season on relegation?

I think £35-£40m is cheap maybe they can't pay a bonus on an instant return to the Prem. So Joao thinks well I'm off then. Surely if you got a bonus of exactly the amount that it reduces by he would think I'll stay with my friend Andre.
