At £10m in 2024 this wasn't a bad deal. It shows how close Sa was to leaving at the time, to Saudi and then Turkey, to balance PSR.

There will be a premium for homegrown players.

Another issue is the club changing manager every 18 months, not having a plan or strategy since Nuno.

Fosun, are you just using AI to recreate the same answer over again? It absolutely was a bad deal. We paid £10m for a GK that was worse than what we already had! Not only that, we offered him parity on Sa's wages, which was a terrible decision and has resulted in us struggling to get rid of him, only doing so by covering a chunk of his wages while he plays for a team that won their respective league last season.

Please do enlighten me on how this wasn't a bad deal, preferably without cut, copy and pasting the same post over again?
A club with even a shred of sense would have waited till they had negotiated a deal for Sa to leave before pressing ahead and spending £10m on a GK that was only marginally better than the third choice already on contract with the club.

Wolves should have paid about £3.5 million for Johnstone. £10 million was an utter disgrace. He's had about six decent games for Wolves.

I said we didn't need to sign a woefully average keeper who had a bad record of injury for £10m. You realise that there were other options, right? Cause you seem to think that Johnstone was the only keeper in the world? He was a useless homegrown keeper who was a cheap option and still overpriced, which is quite the double whammy of rubbish. Which is precisely why we couldn't even give him away without paying for him to play for someone else.


I'm perfectly chill, cheers, pal. I just think any time someone questions the quality of a signing, you just go 'yeah well there wasn't really any other options', which really is just lazy and laughable nonsense, to be honest. We paid £25m to sign Sasa and Johnstone, and they delivered (at best) 6 half decent matches between them, yet for some reason you seem to think that's good business. Are you Jeff in disguise. ???

I actually felt a bit sorry for SJ because he signed understanding that he would be number 1, because Sa was understood to be leaving at that time. Sa's move didn't happen, and SJ was disappointed to be No2.

I don't think that he has behaved well, particularly this last 12 months, so good riddance. Nor did I think he was a particularly good keeper, but that's down to those that signed him. Celtic's problem for now.

Bullys, to be fair, we paid 10 mill because, at the time, other clubs were in for Johnstone and had a 7.5 mill offer rejected. We wanted him as the best homegrown keeper available at the time, so paid 10 mill to get the deal over the line. Then the Sa deal, which was practically complete, fell through, so we were left with two number 1 keepers, which wasn't the plan. People can say he was a terrible signing in hindsight, but after his first few games most on here were lauding how much better than Sa he was. It was only after his first injury and Sa coming in and doing really well that opinions changed, as he made a few mistakes the first game back, having got out of the rhythm of playing - Johnstone himself said he needed to play week in, week out, to maintain confidence and form.


Fickleness of fans and short memories can soon change people's opinions, so now he's suddenly one of the worst signings we've made apparently!!!
In reality, he was a mistake when the Sa deal fell through, but is in no way the worst deal ever - especially if we'd offloaded him back to Palace as we nearly did for 10 mill until they got the Henderson deal done first.

Literally everything that you've both written there is hearsay regarding how other transfers transpired, so let's stop pretending we know when we absolutely do not, eh? Not unless either of you work for the club.
And for the record, my opinion never changed. I said he was bobbins before we signed him, and I still think he is now (feel free to check, as I don't run multiple accounts unlike others on here). And yes, the Saudi window may shut later, but he was our player who they supposedly wanted, so the club should have stood firm and said that he either moves when we can replace him or he doesn't move that window (which is precisely what ended up happening anyway). Other clubs do it all the time, so why is it beyond the realms of possibility for our club to do it exactly? You can speak of hindsight all you want, but the reality is we were entirely fortunate that it did happen that way (the Sa deal falling through), because Johnstone was and still is nowhere near up to the standard of the Prem as a first choice.

He was a shockingly poor signing, which reflected a shockingly poor recruitment window by a shockingly poor Fosun back room. That was my opinion when we signed him, and it's still my opinion now. Oh, and it's pretty well reflected by the fact that we've had to cover some of his wages whilst he plays in a league well below the standard of the Champ. Like you say, not that difficult to understand, pal, as long as you take off your Fosun blinkers anyway. ?
