OK, here's what I wrote on 3 September:

Going to stick my neck out with my usual piece of pointless analysis based on what I've seen so far.

Take the other 19 teams.

We're unbeaten at home, drawing with two top-10 teams. Let's say on average we get 10 points from top 10 teams, 27 from the bottom 9. Obviously the mix won't be that, but it's an idea of where we're at.

Away we'll lose against the top 10, draw against 4 and win against 5 of the bottom 9. That's 19 points away.

That's a total of 56 points. Mid table. If we do better than that, we're really outperforming. If we do much worse then that's disappointing, not to mention the danger of a relegation scrap. Beating the bottom team away from home gives us some reassurance, but if we can win 14 times (9 home 5 away, say) - more than we have the last few seasons in the Premier - we'll be fine and by last season's standards, that's 8th place. "

I'm obviously happy (and smug) we got one more point and one place higher than I predicted.

But the bit I got totally wrong was where the points were coming from, which were as much from teams above us as below. And we won 16 times, not 14.

The bit I mostly take from this is consistency. We played well throughout the season, not dipping like Brighton nor leaving a winning streak till late season, like Leicester.

I'm sure we've all enjoyed this season. We shouldn't beat ourselves up about losing to bottom teams, costing us 6th place. We did as well as we could have reasonably hoped for. Just need Man City to win the cup and we're in Europe. Yes, Europe.

Great post Euroman. I actually had us down for an outside chance at top six. You went eighth. So Wolves split the difference at seventh.

Tell you what. If we had not dropped points against the relegated teams we would have finished above Man U.

We did well against mid table teams Leicester Everton Watford West Ham kind of thing and that made up for losing against bottom teams we were catching ManU before they had their winning streak.

In regards to Europe next season, I don't understand why we are waiting to see the result from the FA cup final, with all English teams in the finals of both European competitions the winners of the Europa will qualify automatically meaning 5 English clubs in champions league, 6th and 7th get Europa and Fa cup winners decides the final spot?

Cant have more than 4 teams from same country in champions league that's why we are waiting on cup final.

South Banker, you can't have more than 5 teams in the Champions League. As it stands, the top 4 are already qualified. If Arsenal win the Europa League, then they too qualify for the Champions league and a French team takes the Europa league place. If they lose, they're in the Europa league and an Austrian team gets the Champions league place. If Watford win the FA Cup, they qualify for Europa league. We only qualify if Man City win it.

If Man city win FA Cup we are in Europa league 2nd round Qualifiers
If Arsenal win Europa league this year and go into the Champion League do we take there place in the Group stages.
